The Issue

To: Mattel, Inc. Leadership and Board of Directors

Mattel, you've spent years telling the world you're one of the best places for LGBTQ+ employees to work. You've proudly displayed your HRC Corporate Equality Index rating. You've posted the rainbows. You've said the words.

Now it's time to mean them.

J.K. Rowling — the creator behind the Harry Potter franchise Mattel continues to license and profit from — is not quietly holding a personal opinion. She is actively and loudly funding legislation that strips 2Spirit, Trans, Intersex, and Gender Expansive (2TIGE) people of their rights, their healthcare, their safety, and in too many cases, their will to live.

She has helped fund campaigns pushing conversion therapy. She has amplified political movements pulling kids off puberty blockers. She has backed legislation denying trans people access to bathrooms, hospitals, and basic human dignity. And every time someone buys a Harry Potter product — including one made by Mattel — a portion of that profit flows back to her platform and her power.

We are not asking you to have an opinion about fiction.

We are asking you to look at what your licensing dollars are funding in the real world — and decide whose side you're on.

The harm is not hypothetical. Families are being torn apart. Parents of trans kids are terrified. Organizations supporting 2TIGE communities have lost funding as politicians echo Rowling's rhetoric and redirect resources away from the people who need them most. Trans people have had to uproot their lives, leave their homes, abandon their careers — not because of their identity, but because of the political and cultural machine that Rowling has helped build and bankroll.

You have a choice.

Continue licensing Harry Potter merchandise, continue adding your revenue to her reach, and let your HRC certification be the corporate equivalent of a bumper sticker.

Or honor the values you claim. Drop the Harry Potter license. Don't renew it. Publicly commit to not partnering with IP that funds active harm to the communities you say you stand with.

We are asking Mattel to:

End all current Harry Potter licensing agreements at the earliest contractual opportunity
Publicly commit to not renewing or entering new Harry Potter merchandise deals
Issue a transparent statement explaining how its licensing decisions align with its stated DEI values
This is not a boycott threat. This is an invitation — to be the company you keep saying you are.

We are watching. We are organized. And we have receipts.

Sign this petition and share it everywhere. 2TIGE lives are not a marketing campaign.

This petition was initiated by Trans Empowerment Project (transempowerment.org), a federally recognized 501(c)(3) supporting Disabled 2TIGE-BIPOC communities since 2016.
