The Issue

I am petitioning President Donald Trump to declare this very significant historical memorial site as a National Monument.

This remote site is on US Forest Service land located in the eastern part of the Gila National Forest in Southwestern New Mexico and surrounded by the Aldo Leopold Wilderness about 10 nautical miles North of Kingston. This was the Warm Spring Apache homeland until miners came in the 1850s, settlers in the 1860s, then ranchers in the 1870s. After being pushed all around by these, Apache Chief Victorio began raiding, plundering and killing in 1879. The 9th US Cavalry from Fort Bayard pursued him to this remote canyon where he had set an ambush. At least 5 Buffalo Soldiers were killed as well as 2 Navajo Scouts, one civilian and 32 horses, in the Battle of Animas Creek on 18 September 1879. Three Buffalo Soldiers later received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their heroic deeds in that battle.
