The Issue

We, the undersigned agree that Boston, Massachusetts desperately needs the North-South Rail Link built.

For those not already familiar with it, it is a proposed railroad tunnel or proposed pair of railroad tunnels that would connect the North Station with the South Station in downtown Boston, hence the name.

Boston is currently served by two divisions of MBTA Commuter Rail, one extending to the north of the city, the other to the south. They are disconnected from each other, and neither connects fully to the MBTA subway system. The result is a fragmented region in which workers and employers cannot access each other efficiently, and where highway congestion is severe, and economic opportunity is very unequally distributed, much to the annoyance of daily commuters in the Boston Metropolitan Area.

Worse, even though the Providence/Stoughton line runs under overhead catenary along the Northeast Corridor, it uses diesel trains! Tell me if that's not pathetic!

These disconnections squander the potential of the existing transportation infrastructure and hobble their regional economy, particularly impacting areas to the north and west of the city. This needs to change now.

Connecting the northern and southern rail lines with a rail link between North and South Stations will transform the unorganized collection of 19th century rail lines into a world class regional rail system, similar to SEPTA Regional Rail in the Philadelphia Area, leveraging the value of the existing rail infrastructure and vastly increasing access and opportunity across the region. Therefore, it is absolutely critical that this project be moved forward with. Since this is an underground tunnel, or pair of underground tunnels, catenary will have to be strung.

The North-South Rail Link would also allow for easier connections between the Amtrak Downeaster as well as Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Specifically, the Acela, Northeast Direct, and the Lake Shore Limited. In fact, since the Northeast Direct and Acela already run on electrified tracks, they could traverse the tunnel by means of the overhead catenary.

Some people may oppose public transportation, but then when they finally get it, they wonder why they didn't get it sooner. It's because they are morons, that's why!
