Save Five Suns Food Trucks!

The Issue

Since 2017, when we first opened, Five Suns Brewing has brought a diverse line-up of food trucks to downtown Martinez. This has allowed our residents to try something new downtown and attract out-of-town patrons that follow the food trucks into our local shops and neighboring establishments. Our beer garden and food truck atmosphere creates a unique experience different from our local sit-down restaurants. Five Suns has always believed in supporting the community by bringing new experiences to downtown Martinez and together we can strengthen it even more with your support for our vibrant, growing downtown.

We have identified caterers and food trucks to be a critical part of our business and are the #1 thing patrons request for their birthday parties or events. We believe the experience is different enough that it does not warrant fears of being detrimental to neighboring businesses. We have worked harmoniously for 5 years using food trucks, and the downtown continues to grow. We believe that other mobile food vendors, such as those at the farmers market, should also be allowed downtown. The more options we have downtown, the more attractive it is to our residents and distant visitors, which is helpful to all businesses. We hope to foster small business success with mobile food vendors who could potentially consider brick and mortar locations to fill the vacant real estate in our town.

We recognize that food trucks cannot be completely unregulated and Five Suns have demonstrated the care and consideration of how this can happen in Martinez. Food trucks at Five Suns have worked harmoniously with the community, have not impeded traffic, have not parked in front of existing storefronts of similar businesses, and have made an effort to bring new flavors and experiences that are missing downtown.

The city ordinances on food trucks are outdated to the point that there is no real definition for food truck; the code is very ambiguous. However the city has chosen to interpret the ordinance in such a way that bans them completely in downtown.

We hope with your support we can: Demand an urgent workshop to discuss and update existing regulations in order to strengthen our downtown business community by bringing food trucks back to Five Suns and other appropriate locations. We intend to deliver this petition to City Council to make our community's voice heard.
