As if Cooke Aquaculture’s reputation wasn’t murky enough, the seafood giant just announced another die-off of 77,000 salmon at one of its Canadian farms. Join us in urging Martha Stewart to cut ties once and for all with a quick Facebook comment.

Infamous Cooke Aquaculture has made headlines yet again--this time for a massive die-off on one of its salmon farms in Newfoundland, Canada. The company claimed that the mortalities were due to "severe winter storm events experienced over the past month." However, the Canadian government is conducting an investigation, as the fish appear to have suffered physical trauma. Fish in 2 of its 8 cages were affected, and the staggering 77,000 who died represent only 14% of the total population of fish held captive on this single factory farm.

The company responded to the incident callously, noting that die-offs like this are a norm for the industry and the uncommonly warm water temperatures may have caused the fish to swim toward the bottom of the sea cages, drowning themselves in the process. Although in ocean water, these fish are confined tightly within cages submerged below the water’s surface, preventing them from being able to swim away from harm. These cages are often left in disrepair as well, which results in breaks in the enclosures and captive-bred fish escaping into the wild population. In fact, Cooke is still under scrutiny for the escape of a quarter-million salmon into waters off the coast of Washington just last year.

Martha Stewart has stated that she is proud to partner with True North, Cooke’s marketing branch, for her seafood line after claiming to have visited one of Cooke’s farms near her home on the Gulf of Maine. But the self-proclaimed animal lover should be anything but proud to be associated with these senseless deaths. Join us by commenting on Stewart’s most recent Facebook post urging her to cut ties with cruel seafood and invest in vegan fish instead.

Thank you for standing strong for compassion.
