A marriage certificate should mean something.

When men and women enters a statutory monogamous marriage in Nigeria, they should be able to trust that the law will protect the legal status chosen.

This petition is not about condemning anyone before investigation or trial. It is about ensuring that the law applies equally to everyone.

A formal petition requesting investigation into suspected bigamy and/or an unlawful second marriage involving Yul Edochie and Judy Austin, during the alleged subsistence of Yul Edochie’s statutory marriage to May Yul-Edochie, has now been received and officially acknowledged by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.

We are asking the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Ministry of Justice, Attorney-General of the Federation and Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and that, if the evidence establishes an offence, the law is allowed to take its course.

This is bigger than May, Yul or Judy. It’s about societal change in behavior. 

It is about every Nigerian woman and man who holds a statutory marriage certificate and believes that the rights written into that marriage are worth protecting.

If our law says the marriage is monogamous, our marriage certificates must mean something.
