Mark McGowan, remove international arrival caps for WA Families!

The issue

The new border transition plan announced by the WA Labor Government on 20th January 2022 stipulates that as of 5th February 2022 international travel into WA will be permitted subject to 14 days of mandatory quarantine including, seven days in hotel quarantine and seven days of self-quarantine at a suitable premise (among other restrictions). It also retained the current international arrival cap of 265 people per week. ***On 7th February, the restrictions were amended to introduce 7-day home quarantine for all incoming travellers, and the cap was increased to 530 people per week.

This petition now calls on Premier Mark McGowan to remove the remaining arrival cap for Western Australians and their immediate families returning from overseas! #dropthecaps

Approximately 35% of Western Australians are born overseas, the highest rate across the country. Yet we are unable to reunite with family from overseas without the risk of us being stranded overseas and/or our family overseas falling outside the arrival caps.

We want to ensure that the collective sacrifices we as the WA community, have made and continue to make are not in vain. We have seen the impact of high COVID-19 transmission in the communities around the world; nobody wants this in WA. But Western Australians deserve to reunite with their families interstate AND overseas!

The transition to home quarantine is a step int the right direction. Now let's #dropthecaps

  • Write to your local MP, using the sample text provided

Above all, don't lose hope. We are in this together x

UPDATE 2nd FEBRUARY 2022
In response to your feedback, we have removed the reference to 14-days of home quarantine as an alternative to the current requirements (seven days in hotel quarantine and seven days of self-quarantine).

UPDATE 6th FEBRUARY 2022

Almost 10,000 people have visited this page, which is awesome! But somehow, only 15% have signed the petition, which is a shame. Freedom of movement affects all of us!

  • If you feel we should open up without any mandates, please sign. This petition is a step in the right direction.
  • If you think that international travel requires different restrictions to domestic travel, please sign. The per capita rate of infection in other Australian states is higher than many countries overseas.
  • If you are not affected by the restrictions, please sign as a gesture of solidarity. The lack of empathy and “if you don’t like it, leave” rhetoric is hurtful to many. We know Australians are better than that.

UPDATE 7th FEBRUARY 2022

The petition was updated to reflect the announcement made by the WA Labor Government that day, removing the request for removal of hotel quarantine. The changes made are in keeping with the intent of this petition to #ReuniteWAfamilies.
