Saturday's Meeting re: 68th & Carr

Saturday's Neighborhood Meeting will be the last public meeting before City Staff makes its recommendation on this project. Representatives from the City, including Project Coordinator Rob Smetana, will be there. Just a few steps and a couple months remain in the application/planning phase of this project: 1. Saturday's neighborhood meeting (10/1) 2. Staff publishes its recommendation (10/11) 3. Public hearing with the Planning Commission (10/18) 4. Public hearing with City Council (11/21) Staff's recommendation is just that--a recommendation--not a decision. But it is a recommendation to approve or deny this project that is passed on to the Planning Commission and to City Council. City Council will make the final decision to approve, approve with conditions, or deny the developer's application. Saturday's meeting is a chance to prove to the City that you are opposed to this project, that this issue is important enough not just to sign a petition, but to back it up with your presence. Your being there gives them not just pages of signatures, but real people to face--the people who make up this community. A Few Key Facts As I've talked with neighbors and members of the community, need for clarification has come up: "I thought this whole area is zoned for single-family detached housing." - Currently, it is. The project proposes to rezone in order to build duplexes and townhouses. In other words, if the City approves the project, that property would have its own zone. "We can't stop them from building what they're building, but we can give input." - Incorrect. The developer has a chance to convince the City that this project is right, as much as we have a chance to convince the City that this project is wrong. "As long as there aren't entrances on 68th or Carr, it should be fine." - The current plans show entrances on both 68th and Carr, as well as on Brentwood. "I won't be at the meeting, but be sure to tell them...." - For a number of reasons, I won't be representing people at tomorrow's meeting, though I will be there.
