Mark crosswalks on Seminary Ave for pedestrian safety

Mark crosswalks on Seminary Ave for pedestrian safety
The Issue
Every day, I witness the dangers that come from the lack of marked crosswalks on Seminary Avenue between Camden and Foothill. There are two marked crosswalks for this entire 1/2 mile section. As a point of comparison, 55th Avenue between Camden and Foothill has 25 marked crosswalks. The pedestrian experience between the two is markedly different and contributes to high speed crashes, keeps residents off the streets, and negatively impacts our neighborhood.
The absence of clearly defined pedestrian paths makes crossing this busy street a hazardous task. We regularly see traffic accidents and drivers blowing the one stop sign at Seminary and Brann as they race to the next stoplight. There are three schools within a short walk (MLA, Frick, and Oakland Unity). Children, families, dog walkers, and everyone is at risk.
Studies have shown that marked crosswalks significantly improve pedestrian safety. According to the Federal Highway Administration, a marked crosswalk can reduce an intersection's pedestrian-related accidents by up to 46%. Cities across the nation have adopted this simple yet effective measure to enhance safety—and it's time for Oakland to do the same—now, not in two years.
We need our district 6 city council person, Kevin Jenkins and our city council person at large, Rowena Brown to prioritize our neighborhood and pressure OAKDOT to take immediate action and prioritize the installation of crosswalks along Seminary Avenue. By doing so, they can help protect our residents and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhood.
