Stop The Greyhound Holocaust

Stop The Greyhound Holocaust
The Issue
Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the human infliction of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, for purposes other than self-defense or survival. Today, on the 1st of February, we commemorate World Galgo Day, in honour of the Spanish greyhounds that are used to hunt in Spain. Every year, this day symbolises the fight to end the terrible fate which awaits these greyhounds once the hunting season in Spain is over. Galgos are mainly used for hunting in Spain. Each year, they are bred in their thousands and forced to spend their days confined and neglected, crammed in cages and starved. They are trained to run as quickly as possible by being attached and dragged behind moving vehicles. They are trained to run as quickly as possible by being attached and dragged behind moving vehicles. But the worst awaits them when the hunting season is over, at the start of the month of February. If the dogs are too old to hunt, or the hunter thinks they’re no longer “useful”, or they simply don’t want to pay to feed them and keep them alive for another year before the next season starts, these greyhounds are brutally killed. Hung from trees, left to die of hunger or thirst in a tiny cage, thrown down wells or off cliffs, burned alive… The hunters use the most barbaric methods to rid themselves of these dogs whom they no longer need. Local charities estimate that every year over 50,000 dogs are affected by what they tragically call, “The Greyhound Holocaust”.
What I'm asking you, Mr. Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy & the European Commission is that you stop this EVIL and barbaric destruction of greyhounds or any animal and make the act of killing another animal illegal in the country of Spain. What we are asking for:
Owners of these pets & animals used for hunting should following the same laws as farm animals:
'Five Freedoms':
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort
3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
5. Freedom from fear and distress
With the support and close co-operation of the Member States, the European Commission has been promoting animal welfare for over 40 years gradually improving the lives of farm animals. We are asking that pets, such as these greyhounds are provided with the same rights as farm animals.
No animal should suffer, and owners including these so called hunters should be forced to follow the FIVE FREEDOMS.
Please change the laws, and help these poor dogs so another animal does not sufferer again.
