Mardi Gras for All. Lift the Police March Ban. Raise Awareness for Domestic Violence!
The issue
Dear Sydney Mardi Gras Organisers,
I am writing to express my disappointment regarding the decision to exclude the police force from marching at the upcoming Mardi Gras parade.
While I understand the hurt and anger felt by the LGBTQIA+ community following the recent tragedy, I believe that excluding police officers from marching sends the wrong message.
LGBTQIA+ individuals are already a minority group who face various challenges. It is important to remember that not all members of any group are the same. Just as not all police officers should be judged based on the actions of one individual.
The decision to exclude the police contradicts the core values of inclusivity and acceptance that Mardi Gras is meant to represent, and even Australia's values of respect, fairness and equality. Instead, you chose to exclude and divide.
Why not allow the police force to march? Raise awareness of domestic violence? The LGBTQIA+ community are not the only ones hurting, the police force community are also hurting.
I am confident that the police force will continue to ensure the safety of all attendees at Sydney Mardi Gras, and next time you or a loved one needs the police force, they will be there. Will you be here for them now?
I urge you to retract your decision to ban police offers from marching at Sydney Mardi Gras. Instead, raise awareness for the serious issue of domestic violence. Remember Jesse Baird, Luke Davies and all those who have been victims of domestic violence. It is important to heal, but is it better to not heal together?
One community, cannot be punished or held accountable for the actions of one individual.
Your vision is “LGBTQIA+ people are respected and treated equally through a movement that enacts positive social change”
Your purpose is “To champion LGBTQIA+ social issues through leveraging the power of arts, culture, partnerships and celebration”
Are you upholding your own vision and purpose?
