Allow Motorcycles To Use HOV Lanes

The Issue

Environmental Reason

HOV lanes were implemented to reduce traffic congestion and pollution by encouraging carpooling. Hybrid vehicles are allowed to use these lanes based upon their low carbon footprint. Motorcycles are also low carbon footprint vehicles that should be given the same consideration. Doug Martin, Mississauga, Canada

Occupancy Reason

A motorcycle can hold just 2 occupants, while the average car can hold at least 4; vans considerably more. Yet the regulation is just two or more occupants in a vehicle. The current legislation is therefore discriminatory as it requires motorcycles to have 100% occupancy in order to use the HOV lanes, while autos and trucks can have less than 50% and still use the lanes. The City of Toronto allows motorcycles to use their HOV lanes, so I believe the Province should also allow this use in HOV lanes on their roads. Malcom Kerr, Orangeville, Canada

Law Consistency

The Ontario MTO book on Motorcycle Safety discusses how the safest position for a motorcycle to be in is the far right or far left lanes. We are even tested on this on the motorcycle license tests. Yet with HOV lanes, we are not allowed to get as far left as possible. This is compromising our safety. Dave Cole, Mississauga, Canada

Safety Reason

But above all reasons, Safety is the most important. We have in our hands the means to help in preventing motorcycle related accidents by allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes. A simple change in this policy will not increase cost to our current infrastructure and will reduce the cost of medical assistance to motorcycle related accidents. Hector Navarro, Burlington, Canada

This simple change will help to save lives with zero added cost.
