Remove Confederate General's Name from White's Ferry in Poolesville, Maryland
The Issue
White's Ferry in Poolesville, Maryland, is named after the confederate Civil War General Jubal A. Early. Early's name is on the sign on the ferry and it is called out on the White's Ferry website [https://www.poolesvillemd.gov/338/Whites-Ferry The ferry crosses the Potomac and connects White's Ferry Road in Montgomery County, Maryland with White's Ferry Road Loudoun County, Virginia.
The Confederacy warred against the United States of America and supported slavery. Public places and historic landmarks should not be used to honor the people who fought against our country and supported slavery. Early's family also owned slaves.
This petition echoes the movements across the country to remove the statues of confederate military personnel. The photo shared on this petition is from the White's Ferry Facebook page. Thank you.
