Facilitate the sale of Mercy the escapee to animal advocates so she can live out her life in a sanctuary.
The Issue
On Friday May 29th a mother pig was found in the outskirts of Winnipeg enjoying a brief stint of freedom after a lifetime of confinement, as shown by her many visible cuts and scars covering her body. She was eventually captured and taken in by Manitoba Pork Council. Mark Flynn, an animal care specialist with Manitoba Pork Council said "Right now we're going to take it off to a farm just to make sure it has a chance to recover and get over this."
Winnipeg business owner Charlotte Sigurdson, together with the non-profit Manitoba Pig Save raised $2465 to purchase the pig and send her to a sanctuary that is ready to taker her in.
Today, Monday June 1, Manitoba Pig Save released this statement "We have just received a response from Manitoba Pork Council denying our request to purchase Mercy for full market price and denied our submitted letter by a willing sanctuary to provide her with a forever home. We also confirmed that we had 4 other sanctuaries in ON that offered to bring her in and safely, humanely transport her. We are still tirelessly working hard to find a way to rescue Mercy from her destined fate of gestation crates and slaughter. ***PLEASE contact Manitoba Pork Council to express your concerns!"
We are calling on Manitoba Pork Council to allow the pig to be purchased by animal advocates.
