According to Mango, size 12 is a plus-size. The fashion multinational
has announced that in January 2014 it will release Violeta by Mango,
"a new fashion line for young women from sizes 12 to 24".
Labelling size 12 as a plus-size implies a totally distorted vision of
reality. The Spanish Ministry of Health established in 2007 that a
distinction could only be made beginning with size 20.
Ads like these contribute to thousands of cases of eating disorders
like anorexia and bulimia around the world. MANGO markets to young
girls, adolescents and women who will consider themselves overweight
if their label of choice considers them to plus size if they are sizes
12, 14 or 16. This type of campaign only pushes young women to feel
even more obliged to be thin. Thousands of young women will feel
pressured and insulted by being labeled plus-size.
The image of girls and women that Mango should project ought to be
healthy and healthful. For this reason, we call for the IMMEDIATE
withdrawal of this campaign, and call on MANGO to assume its mistake
and adopt its corporate social responsibility of promoting a healthy
aesthetic for the girls and women who visit its stores.
