Mandatory, standardised and improved sexual consent education in ALL WA schools, earlier.

The issue

Our names are Alice and Carla, and as two young professionals with postgraduate degrees, we have spent much of our adult lives on university campuses.  We have witnessed first hand how problematic sexual behaviour has been normalised.  Too many of our friends and loved ones have been sexually harassed, assaulted and/or raped.

The Federal Government just spent $3.8 million creating a confusing, out-of-touch, and frankly disastrous sexual consent campaign.  None of the videos aimed at students in years 10-12 use the words ‘sex’, ‘rape’ or ‘assault’. Instead, they employ confusing metaphors.  It is not surprising that some of these videos have since been taken down, and reinforces why we have created this petition.

Inspired by the movement that Chanel Contos has begun, we are calling on the WA state government to follow NSW's lead and pledge their commitment to improve sexual consent education in our schools.  We need to improve our sexual consent education curriculum and we need it standardised across our schools.

We are disappointed with the WA government for remaining silent on this issue.

Education on sexual consent and ethics must start from a young age.  It needs to be viewed as a lifelong learning endeavor if we hope to see meaningful change in our society.

We are calling on the WA State Government to follow NSW's lead in pledging to improve sexual consent education. Specifically, we want:

1) Mandatory, standardised and improved sexual consent education in all WA schools.

2) Sexual consent education being taught from year 7 or earlier.

3) Specialised training for our teachers to enable them to more effectively deliver sexual consent education.

Please sign our petition, and share amongst your networks, to convince our state leaders how important it is to improve sexual consent education in our schools.

Disclaimer:

We’re not experts on consent, but we are incredibly strong advocates for change.  We also want to emphasise that Chanel Contos has been the pioneer of this movement and has done brilliantly to bring about change in NSW.
