Mandatory SEND and SEMH training for all staff in schools. Fix our broken education system
Mandatory SEND and SEMH training for all staff in schools. Fix our broken education system
The Issue
Every Child Deserves to Be Understood
I am calling for mandatory SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) training for all teachers and education staff in schools.
This is not just a policy issue for me. This is personal.
For the last five years, I have been fighting for my child because her needs are not being met in school. Five years of emails. Five years of meetings. Five years of pleading to be heard. Five years of watching a child who deserves support instead be misunderstood.
Sadly, my story is not unique.
Across the country, thousands of families are fighting the same battle. Children with additional needs are being punished for struggling, isolated instead of supported, suspended instead of understood, and labelled as "difficult" instead of being given the help they desperately need.
Too many education staff simply do not receive enough training to understand SEND and SEMH needs. As a result, children are slipping through the cracks of a system that is supposed to protect and support them.
To a school, our children may be a number on a register, a data point, or a statistic.
To us, they are everything.
They are our world.
They are our reason for getting up every morning.
They are children with dreams, talents, fears, feelings, and unlimited potential.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that every child has the right to:
• A standard of living that supports their physical, mental, and social development.
• Express their opinions and have their voices heard.
• An education that allows them to achieve their full potential.
• Life and development, ensuring their wellbeing and healthy growth.
• Non-discrimination, regardless of disability, need, or circumstance.
Yet every day, children with SEND and SEMH needs are being denied these basic rights.
Children are being excluded from lessons.
Children are being suspended.
Children are being made to feel like burdens.
Children are coming home believing they are the problem.
Children's mental health is suffering because the adults around them do not always have the training needed to understand what lies beneath the behaviour.
No child should have to fight to be understood.
No parent should have to spend years battling for support that should have been there from the beginning.
The heartbreaking reality is that the education system is failing some of our most vulnerable children.
This is not about blaming teachers. Many teachers work tirelessly and care deeply about the children in their classrooms. This is about ensuring that every member of staff has the knowledge, understanding, and confidence to support children with additional needs effectively.
Mandatory SEND and SEMH training would help create schools where children are understood before they are punished, supported before they reach crisis point, and valued for who they are.
Something has to change.
The current system is broken.
Our children cannot keep paying the price for a lack of understanding.
Every child deserves to feel safe.
Every child deserves to feel valued.
Every child deserves an education.
Every child deserves to be understood.
Please sign this petition and stand with the thousands of families who are fighting every day for their children's rights, dignity, and future.
Because our children are not statistics.
They are lives.
They are futures.
And they deserve better.
