"Stand Up for Justice: Demand Life Sentences for Murder! Join Us at Parliament House on 24 March 2024 at 12pm. Celeste deserved justice and she didn’t receive it!  Please march with us to plead with the DPP to appeal the manifestly inadequate sentence!"

Celeste Manno, a radiant young woman of only 23 years, was tragically taken from us. She was known for her love, kindness, and joy; she had the unique ability to make people feel special. However, this very quality led to her untimely death at the hands of an ex co-worker. Despite seeking protection through an intervention order, Celeste was brutally murdered in her own bed.

Her killer received a sentence of just 36 years in prison - a stark reminder that our current justice system is failing victims like Celeste. It's time we demand change.

Since 2018, murder has been one of a handful of standard sentence offences.  Meaning that the standard sentence for murder is 25 years.  Between 2018 and 30 June 2022, 34 murder cases were sentenced.  In those 34 cases, the shortest prison sentence was 14 years, the longest was 36 years, and the median was 22.5 years, meaning that half of the prison sentences were below 22.5 years and half were above.

Only 2 out of the 34 (yes, 2) received a life sentence.  The fact that not all murderers receive life sentences leaves their victim’s families, like Celeste's, feeling that justice has not been served.

We propose mandatory life sentences for anyone convicted of murder. This would ensure that no murderer can walk free unsupervised while their victim's family continues to suffer the lifelong consequences of their actions.

By signing this petition you are standing with us in our fight for justice and reform - demanding mandatory life sentences for murderers and ensuring that tragedies like what happened to Celeste Manno never happen again. Please sign today.
