In September 2025, my 16-year-old son was involved in a serious road traffic collision while riding his moped. A car pulled out into his path, striking him and throwing him across the bonnet and along the road. The driver’s explanation was that they “didn’t see him”.

This is an all-too-common reason given following collisions involving motorcycles and mopeds, and it highlights a serious issue: motorcyclists are often overlooked by car drivers who fail to properly look for them.

I strongly believe that wearing high-visibility clothing when riding would significantly improve the visibility of motorcycle and moped riders, particularly younger riders. Unfortunately, many riders view hi-vis gear as “uncool” and choose not to wear it, despite the clear safety benefits.

I would like to see a cultural shift and, ultimately, changes to UK road safety regulations to make high-visibility clothing mandatory for motorcycle and moped riders. This could help reduce the number of riders who go unseen on our roads, preventing serious injuries and, in some cases, saving lives.

No parent should have to watch their child suffer due to something that could have been prevented.
