Support us to encourage de-sexing and microchipping of domestic cats in Waimakariri

The issue

Kitty Kingdom Cat Rescue in Rangiora are asking for your support to encourage de-sexing and microchipiping of domestic cats in the Waimakariri District.

Why sign our petition?

  • Rescue centres are overloaded
  • Cases of cruelty against stray and feral cats and kittens are on the increase in our district
  • People are innocently giving away unwanted kittens, only for them to be used as bait in dog fighting rings
  • Kittens are regularly dumped and many are too young to survive alone
  • kittens are being born to die in Waimakariri
  • The biggest cause of our feral cat population is domestic cats and kittens being dumped at our local rivers, rural areas and areas of conservation
  • Feral cats are having an impact on our native wildlife and protected species
  • Feral cats can carry diseases which may be passed to cattle, sheep and domestic pets

How will this help?

  • Education and encouragement to de-sex and microchip cats will reduce the population, encourage responsible cat ownership, protect our wildlife and reduce cases of animal cruelty

Why should I de-sex and microchip my cat?

  • Cats that are microchipped have a far better chance of being reunited with their owners, should they become lost
  • Desexing may result in a positive behavioural change in your cat
  • Desexed cats show reduced aggression towards other cats –  your desexed cat is less likely to experience cat fight related injuries and diseases like bites, abscesses and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
  • Desexing can reduce your cat’s possibility of major health issues later in life like mammary and prostate tumours and uterine infections, testicular cancer and breast cancer
  • A desexed cat is likely to live a longer, healthier life
