As a dedicated fish-keeper of 15 years, I have witnessed countless instances of fish being inadequately housed and cared for.

This is not just about my personal experience; it's a widespread issue that affects thousands of fish across the globe. 

Fish are sentient beings that require specific conditions to thrive, yet many hobbyists and traders lack the necessary knowledge or resources to provide these conditions. The result is an untold number of fish suffering in silence.

We propose legislation requiring all fish hobbyists and traders to prove they can meet minimum welfare standards before being allowed to purchase these creatures. This includes appropriate housing, feeding, water quality management, disease prevention measures among others.

Additionally, we call for laws enforcing penalties against cruelty towards fish. Just as with other pets like dogs or cats, cruelty towards fish and other aquatic life should be recognised as a serious offence punishable by law.
