NAPi Launches Landmark Position Statement on Warning Labels for HFSS Foods, endorsed by 28 oprganisations
We are pleased to announce that Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi), along with 28 national health, nutrition, consumer and medical organisations, has successfully launched its Position Statement (June 2025) calling for mandatory front-of-pack warning labels on food and drink products high in fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS).
The launch comes at a time when:
India’s NCD burden is rising rapidly, with obesity, diabetes, and hypertension affecting millions. The Supreme Court has recently directed the government to finalise regulations on clear food labelling.
The Economic Survey 2024–25 and ICMR-NIN Guidelines 2024 support warning labels as urgent public health measures.
Key Demands:
✅ Replace Health Star Rating with simple “High in Sugar/Salt/Fat” warning labels
✅ Use ICMR/WHO thresholds for HFSS classification
✅ Ban marketing to children and celebrity endorsements of HFSS foods
✅ Ensure 12-month industry compliance deadline, not 4 years
✅ Keep trade policy free of industry interference in nutrition labelling
This Statement is a call for immediate, evidence-based action to protect public health—especially that of children—against the aggressive promotion of ultra-processed foods.
🖋 Statement endorsed by: PHFI, IPHA, CSE, Diabetes India, Consumer VOICE, Indian Society of Nephrology, and others.
📜 Supreme Court: “Packets have no information… what are you feeding your children?”
📣 Public Petition: 2000 citizens have endorsed the demand for warning labels. Please share to make it 20,000
