Momentum Builds for Warning Labels on Junk Food

Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi), along with 28 national health, medical, nutrition and consumer organisations, successfully launched a Joint Position Statement on June 3, 2025, calling on the Government of India to mandate front-of-pack warning labels on packaged food and beverages high in sugar, salt, and saturated fat (HFSS).

The campaign has received significant media traction and policy interest, following strong support from the Supreme Court and recent remarks from the Hon'ble Prime Minister that "children must know how much sugar they are eating."

Highlights of the Campaign:

1. Supreme Court directive to finalise labelling rules within 3 months (April 2025).
2. Economic Survey 2024-25 supports stricter front-of-pack nutrition labelling.
3. ICMR-NIN Guidelines 2024 define HFSS thresholds and recommend warning labels.
4. Broad civil society and professional support from 28 public health and consumer organisations
