Mandate Vision Tests for All Drivers

Mandate Vision Tests for All Drivers
The Issue
As an optician, I witness firsthand how many individuals do not meet the required driving standard but continue to operate vehicles. This alarming trend poses a significant risk of life-threatening accidents, especially among elderly drivers who often have undiagnosed vision issues.
In the UK HM Senior Coroner for Lancashire Dr James Adeley has sent a report to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to say action should be taken after finding that "enforcement of visual legal standards for motorists is "ineffective and unsafe".
Recent reports highlight a concerning number of fatalities linked to elderly drivers with impaired vision. RoSPA estimates that around 1.8 million drivers do not meet the current vision standard, and this will rise to 4 million by 2050.
It's crucial to implement stricter regulations to ensure the safety of all road users. By law, motor insurance should require drivers to submit confirmation from an optician at least every two years, verifying that they meet the driving standard of at least 6/10 on the Snellen scale, with or without correction. For those needing corrective lenses, proof of purchase should be mandatory.
In addition, a regulation that mandates keeping a spare pair of spectacles in the vehicle can prevent accidents caused by unexpected loss or damage to primary eyewear.
These measures will not only protect drivers who might not be aware of their deficient vision but also safeguard pedestrians and other road users. Promoting regular vision check-ups can significantly decrease traffic-related incidents and enhance overall road safety.
Join me in calling on policymakers to create and enforce these crucial regulations. Sign this petition to advocate for safer roads by incorporating mandatory vision assessments and eyewear requirements for all drivers, especially the elderly. Together, we can push for this change and potentially save countless lives.
