Mandate Transparency in Retail Pricing of Produce

Mandate Transparency in Retail Pricing of Produce
The issue
The lack of transparency in the pricing structure for produce at supermarkets is a growing concern. Consumers are often unaware of the cost disparity between what growers receive for their produce and what they pay at the checkout. This lack of knowledge allows for potential price gouging by the big supermarkets, which can lead to inflated prices that do not reflect the true cost of production. According to a study by the University College London, on average, farmers receive only 9% of the retail price (source: UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources).
We believe that listing both grower's costs and retail prices side by side will provide consumers with greater insight into where their money goes, fostering a more equitable food system. It will also raise awareness about any unfair pricing practices employed by supermarkets. Therefore, we call upon regulatory bodies to mandate this dual-pricing display system in all supermarkets nationwide.
There are calls for a review by the ACCC from growers and Government, however it is the community that will ultimately decide if they are willing to tolerate price gouging by big supermarkets: https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2024-01-08/accc-supermarket-pricing-inquiry-calls-pricing-gouging-claims/103293344
