Mandate to provide ground level HRT information to all those with symptoms of menopause
The Issue
Having personally experienced the lack of care and evidence based, factual information about menopause and HRT when I was peri menopausal at aged 37, I decided to do something about it and after many years of work and research, I now help others to access the help they need, starting my support service in 2017.
I have witnessed first hand, how lack of information and negative misconceptions about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) still cause unnecessary suffering, leading to both mental and physical distress.
It is with this personal insight that I call upon the government to fund the National Health Service (NHS) to take this vital step in educating about symptoms of peri menopause and the efficacy of regulated HRT as well as offering a range of options to move them forward.
Studies show that HRT is a safe and effective treatment for managing menopause symptoms, yet, misinformation and fear prevail. For instance, data shows that mortality rates are no higher and are in fact lower, for women using HRT, compared to those who do not.
For too long, we have been sidelined, dismissed, and misdiagnosed when presenting with possible peri menopause symptoms. This could be remedied by equipping NHS GPs with the funds to provide each relevant patient with a very simple up to date one page leaflet during their appointment, outlining helpful resources and evidence based information on HRT options, safety and efficacy. Currently the process is either not happening or is too detailed for those needing that ground level awareness and information.
Such a requirement would not only save the NHS money and time but ensure that we are duly informed about regulated HRT's efficacy and safety, enabling them to make empowered decisions on their future health management.
Postscript:
It is important to note that the requested leaflet should be short and very much focussed on the needs of those seeking rudimentary menopause and HRT information; whilst being embedded into the short GP appointment to allow for and encourage impactful discussion, resulting in the patient feeling heard, understood and more empowered to ask for the right help without feeling overwhelmed or dismissed.
Join me in demanding a mandate for NHS GPs to deliver ground level but crucial HRT information to all women where appropriate.
