Mandate the Use of Current Building Energy Codes In Sioux Falls Projects

The Issue

As residents of Sioux Falls, we became deeply interested in a national laboratory’s analysis comparing the cost-effectiveness of the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the old code that Sioux Falls currently operates with – namely the 2009 IECC. These codes regulate new construction of single-family and low-rise multifamily residential buildings and are updated every three years; so Sioux Falls has opted out of several cycles of energy saving updates.

According to the laboratory’s study, adopting the 2018 IECC proves to be very beneficial to us Sioux Falls residents. Transitioning to these newer codes would translate to a 23.4% energy cost reduction, meaning annual savings of $619 on average for newly constructed households in our community. This, alongside the environmental benefits of more energy-efficient practices is a clear win-win situation for everyone involved. Still, city government defers.

This is an opportunity to not only save money but also make a positive impact on our environment. We urge you to join us in petitioning the city to adopt the 2018 energy codes (or those more recent) for all building projects. Sign this petition today and let's work towards a cost-effective and eco-friendly Sioux Falls.
