Mandate the Care Quality Commission to Investigate Individual Cases in Care Homes

The Issue

My mother went in to respite care in. January 2023 but due to neglect physically and mentally, deteriorated within ten weeks of her stay at a care home. Despite our pleas , her situation was not addressed promptly. This negligence led to us moving her in another home this also commissioned by the Council we moved her there paying £4800.00 for one month but this nearly costing her life.in the beginning of June 2023 she was rushed to hospital with Sepsis Pneumonia and a Grade 3 Bedsore. The pictures you see are one Christmas 2022 and then June 2023 . Today, she is safe in a new care home but her health is poor and will never be the same again.

The current system allows for such tragedies because the Care Quality Commission (CQC) only investigates a care home if you there has been more than one complaint lodged against it. This policy overlooks individual cases of neglect and abuse that occur daily in these establishments. Moreover, councils are failing their duty of checking these homes or defending residents' rights despite paying around £1000 per week for their services.

These homes often employ unqualified staff at minimum wage and provide cheap meals to residents - an unacceptable practice given the fees charged. It is time we demand change.

We call upon policymakers to mandate CQC with powers to investigate individual complaints about care homes irrespective of how many complaints have been lodged against them previously. We also urge local councils to take responsibility for ensuring quality care by regularly inspecting these facilities and taking swift action when standards are not met.

Please sign this petition if you believe that every elderly person deserves respect, dignity and quality care regardless of where they live or who provides their care.
