Mandate Temporary Social Media Shutdowns for a National Reflective Event

The Issue

I've experienced firsthand the seismic impact of social media on our lives. Family, friends, and acquaintances have been ensnared in its web, chasing a picture-perfect life while ignoring the beautiful reality before them. To my heartbreak, some within my circle have even lost their lives in the process.

Before the advent of social media, life was simpler. However, the pressure to paint a flawless image for the world's scrutiny has drastically increased. The Consumer Use of Technology survey indicates that 79% of adults in the United States use social media daily, painting a world where social perception often supersedes living in the moment. (Consumer Reporting, 2020)

This torrent of pressure can be slowed down, if not halted, with meaningful social media regulation. I propose a mandate for social media platforms to initiate a temporary shutdown for two weeks each year or one week twice a year. This pause will facilitate a national reflective "event" under the direction of the U.S. government, a period for us humans to remember our inherent value beyond the digital and rediscover life's uncomplicated joys.

Our mental health and overall well-being should be prioritized over incessant online connection. By signing this petition, you're choosing quality lives over quantity likes, personal wellbeing over public perception, and meaningful moments over manufactured realities. A break from social media can act as a societal reset button, reminding us of the opportunity that life in the United States provides — to live with gratitude and real connection. Let's reclaim our lives from the grip of social media. Please, I hope you'll sign and support this cause.
