Make it Mandatory for Supermarkets to Donate Usable Food Waste

The Issue

In France it has been illegal to throw away edible food waste since 2016. In the UK supermarkets throw away around 350 million meals annually: around 200,000 tonnes of food. It is estimated that only 1/4 of this is redistributed or donated.

To qualify for free school meals in the UK a family income must be less than £7500 annually. Countless other families are struggling but don't qualify, which has a big impact on concentration and attendance. This year around 2.2 million children are registered for free school meals.

We need to make it mandatory for supermarkets to partner with schools that have a high proportion of disadvantaged students, to redistribute usable food waste to schools. Let's increase attendance, concentration, wellbeing and support the environment and sustainability while we do it.
