Mandate Subtitled Screenings in Cinemas for Inclusivity

The Issue

In a world where entertainment is a vital aspect of social interaction and cultural enrichment, it's heartbreaking to realize that a significant portion of our community is excluded from fully enjoying cinema experiences. Millions of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing are unable to fully appreciate films in cinemas due to the lack of subtitles. This is a stark oversight that can be remedied easily with the implementation of consistent subtitled screenings.

According to the World Health Organization, over 5% of the world's population, or 430 million people, suffer from disabling hearing loss. In the US alone, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million individuals) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing. These individuals deserve access to the same cultural resources that hearing individuals have, including the ability to enjoy films in cinemas.

The absence of subtitles in films is not just an issue of accessibility but also one of inclusivity. By not providing subtitles, cinemas inadvertently send the message that the deaf and hard of hearing are not part of their audience. This is not only unfair but also preventable. Implementing a greater number of subtitled screenings would demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

A solution is already available: many cinemas have the technology needed to screen films with subtitles, yet the offerings remain sparse. We urge cinema chains and independent theaters to schedule at least 50% of their screenings with subtitles. This change would significantly enhance the movie-going experience for our deaf and hard of hearing communities while not diminishing the experience for others.

Let us take this opportunity to stand up for inclusivity and ensure everyone has equal access to cultural experiences. By signing this petition, you are advocating for change and helping create a world where nobody feels left out of an essential part of our societal culture—watching movies. Please sign and share this petition to show your support for more inclusive cinema screenings.
