Mandate Special Needs Restrooms with Adult Changing Tables in All Public Buildings
The Issue
Our son, soon to be four years old, takes on the world with strength and courage, despite the challenges brought about by Down Syndrome. His daily life includes numerous encounters that others might consider small hurdles but for us manifest as towering obstacles, particularly when we need to change his diaper in public restrooms. Infant changing tables are just not adequate for his age and size, making what should be a simple task almost impossible.
It's high time we advocated for families like ours by mandating that all public buildings should be equipped with at least one special needs restroom with adult-size changing tables. This necessity is not only for the convenience of parents and caregivers, but also to maintain the dignity of those with special needs.
Approximately 5.4% of children aged 3 to 17 in the US have a developmental disability such as Down Syndrome [Source: CDC]. It is firmly believed that this figure represents a significant number of families experiencing the exact difficulties that we do. The absence of suitable facilities undermines the rights and diminishes the quality of life of these individuals and their caregivers.
We urge lawmakers and city planners to consider this requirement as a necessity, not mere convenience. Let our public facilities reflect our respect and consideration for all. We believe that inclusivity should be a staple in society and that starts with our infrastructure. We request your support on this crucial matter. Please, sign our petition.
