Experiencing the view of dead animals on our roadsides is heartbreaking. Having to witness starved animals or those in overcrowded shelters is distressful, not only for me but for the caring residents of Cherokee County. This has been a situation that is not only sad but also unacceptable in a caring community. This is why the implementation of stricter regulations for pet owners is essential for our community.

It's clear that we have to increase the level of responsibility among animal owners. Our county does not have a leash law currently, but we need to consider alternatives to manage the pet population effectively. Therefore, we propose that all pet owners should either have their animals spayed/neutered or ensure they are properly confined and not allowed to roam freely.

Alarmingly, 15,000 dogs are put down in Alabama alone each year, a figure which we must do everything in our power to reduce. In addition, a large number of these animals are victims of neglect, malnutrition, or, worse, cruelty. By mandating spaying/neutering or proper confinement for animals, we can take a step towards reducing these upsetting numbers and help protect the vulnerable animals in our community.
