Mandate silent fireworks to protect vulnerable communities

The Issue

As someone who is both neurodivergent and a pet owner, I know firsthand how distressing fireworks can be.

What many see as a few moments of celebration can feel like hours of fear, panic, and sensory overload for others. 💔

When fireworks explode, the noise can trigger anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, and physical distress — not only for people like me, but also for veterans living with PTSD, children with sensory sensitivities, the elderly, and countless animals terrified by sounds they can’t understand or escape.

According to the RSPCA, thousands of animals suffer every year during firework seasons. Many pets run away in fear, injure themselves trying to hide, or even die from stress-related complications. Animal shelters report spikes of up to 30–60% in missing pets following major fireworks events.

And it’s not just pets — wildlife, too, is deeply affected. Birds abandon nests, small animals flee habitats, and the sudden noise disrupts entire ecosystems.

For humans, the impact is equally real. People with PTSD often describe fireworks as sounding like gunfire or explosions, which can cause flashbacks and sleepless nights. Those who are autistic or sensory-sensitive can experience unbearable stress or shutdowns from the unpredictable noise.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

🎆 Silent or low-noise fireworks already exist — and are being used successfully in parts of Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. These displays are just as dazzling, preserving the magic of celebration while eliminating the suffering that comes with the sound.

By choosing innovation over tradition, we can create celebrations that are inclusive, compassionate, and sustainable.

Fireworks should bring joy, not trauma.

✨ Let’s work together to make a change. Sign the petition to mandate silent fireworks and protect vulnerable communities, animals, and the environment — so that everyone can celebrate safely.

We call on the Home Office to restrict the sale of loud fireworks and mandate silent or low-noise alternatives for public and private displays across the UK, protecting vulnerable people, animals, and wildlife.

💖 Together, we can make compassion the loudest sound of all.
