Mandate Signage to Protect Diamondback Terrapin Habitats from Fishing Threats in Sarasota

The Issue

My partner and I have always held a special place in ours hearts for the Diamondback Terrapins. These unique creatures, with their distinctive diamond-patterned shells, are more than just animals to us - they are a symbol of the rich biodiversity that we are privileged to share our world with. Unfortunately, not many people know about these terrapins and the threats they face daily.

In Sarasota, Florida, where we live, these terrapins inhabit brackish waters along our coastlines. However, their habitats often intersect with popular fishing areas and crab traps which pose significant threats to their survival. Many terrapins get unintentionally caught in these traps and suffer fatal consequences.

According to a study by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), between 2001-2011 alone there was an estimated mortality rate of 50% for adult female terrapins due to crab trap bycatch in Sarasota Bay.

This is why we are calling on local authorities in Sarasota County to mandate signage marking Diamondback Terrapin habitats near fishing areas. This simple yet effective measure can raise awareness among fishers about the presence of these vulnerable creatures and encourage them to take precautions when setting up their gear.

Let us ensure that our actions do not inadvertently harm this fascinating species that contributes so much richness to our local ecosystems. Please sign this petition today and help protect Diamondback Terrapins from unnecessary harm.
