Mandate SEN Training for all Teacher Trainee’s
The Issue
As a parent of a child diagnosed with special educational needs (SEN), I've encountered numerous situations where my child's teachers misinterpret behaviour linked to his condition. Instead of seeing the behavioural nuances as part of his unique challenges, many quickly label him as 'naughty' or 'defiant'. This lack of understanding can deeply affect a child's educational journey and emotional well-being, leading to feelings of alienation and frustration.
Hundreds of other parents share similar experiences. In discussions with these families, the consensus is clear: many teachers lack sufficient training in handling SEN. It is not just an oversight but a gap in the educational system that ultimately impacts the futures of children with SEN. The reality is that teachers are at the frontline of education. For them to effectively fulfill their roles, it is crucial they possess a foundational understanding of SEN.
Consider the statistics: according to the British Educational Research Association, approximately 14.9% of pupils in England have some form of special educational needs. Yet, compulsory SEN training for aspiring teachers is not standardised across all educational institutions. Without this essential training, newly qualified teachers may be ill-prepared to meet the diverse needs of their classroom environments, leading to misconceptions and ineffective teaching strategies.
Therefore, we must change the law to require all teacher training programs to include basic SEN education as a mandatory component. This legislative change would not only help nurturing more inclusive classrooms but also ensure that every child receives the supportive and empathetic learning environment they deserve.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a fundamental shift in how we prepare teachers for the increasingly diverse classrooms they will face. Join me in urging educational authorities to make SEN training an obligatory element of teacher preparation. Together, we can foster a more inclusive educational landscape for our children.
