Mandate Safety Certifications for All Venues

Mandate Safety Certifications for All Venues
The Issue
As a member of the LGBTQ community and the creator of the street safety campaign, 'Back Off, Back Up' (BOBU), I can attest to the pervasive fear and lack of guaranteed safety that many experience while out in public. Our city, Brighton & Hove, is celebrated for its tolerance and acceptance, yet distressingly, those in need of help often struggle to find safe spaces where they can get help and assistance.
Brighton & Hove, like every city, should be a haven where everyone can enjoy their days and evenings out without fear. However, the reality often falls short of this ideal.
This is the driving force behind the 'Back Off, Back Up' campaign and its accompanying app, which identifies designated safe spots throughout the city where anyone experiencing harassment can find help and support.
We must take our campaign a step further. We are calling for a change in law or government policy to mandate that every venue becomes certified as a safe space. This certification would involve adhering to safety guidelines that ensure the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their gender, sexuality, or identity.
Supporting Facts:
- Hate crimes on the basis of sexual orientation have increased by 112% in the last five years (Stonewall figures).
- 'Back Off, Back Up' aims to provide safe spaces in businesses such as bars and restaurants, where users can go if they feel in danger of being attacked.
- The 'Back Off, Back Up' app and sticker identify venues where staff have been trained to support people who feel in danger.
- By doing the BOBU training and adopting the sticker, businesses become ‘go-to’ places for every kind of customer, not just those feeling unsafe.
- This campaign also gives venues a voice against crime, empowering them to take a stand and actively contribute to a safer community for all.
No one should experience fear when participating in a city's nightlife. Mandating safety certifications for all venues would create an environment where everyone can feel comfortable and protected while enjoying their evenings.
This certification would involve adhering to safety guidelines that ensure the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their gender, sexuality, or identity.
We urge you to join us in advocating for safety and inclusivity. Sign this petition to demand safety certification for all venues, demonstrating that we, as a community, refuse to remain silent. It's time to Back Off. Back Up, and make our cities safer for everyone.
Please sign and support this crucial initiative to ensure that every city across the UK becomes a place where safety and inclusivity are guaranteed for all.
