Mandate Road Tests for Michigan Residents Aged 63 and Older

Mandate Road Tests for Michigan Residents Aged 63 and Older
The Issue
I am a concerned citizen who values the safety of all road users in Michigan, including our elderly population. My personal experience with my grandmother, who voluntarily stopped driving in her early fifties due to her declining driving skills, has made me realize that some elderly people may pose a risk on our roads. Instances of elderly drivers significantly under the speed limit, straying outside of their lanes or failing to use turn signals are not uncommon and can lead to dangerous situations.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), fatal crash rates increase starting at age 70 and are highest among drivers aged 85 and older. This is largely due to increased susceptibility to injury and medical complications among older drivers rather than an increased tendency to get into crashes. These statistics highlight the need for regular road tests for this age group.
Therefore, I propose that all Michigan residents aged 63 and older be required by law to retake their road tests periodically. This will ensure they still possess the necessary skills for safe driving while also protecting them from potential harm.
This is not about limiting freedom or independence; it's about ensuring safety on our roads—for both elderly drivers themselves as well as other motorists and pedestrians. Let's make sure everyone gets home safely at the end of each day.
Please sign this petition if you agree that mandatory retesting should be implemented for Michigan residents aged 63 years old and above.
