The Issue

On May 14th 2024, my beloved cat and childhood cat was callously killed in a  collision with a vehicle in my neighbourhood by an Amazon delivery driver. My cat was killed instantly and instead of immediately stopping the vehicle, checking on the welfare of Boo the driver deliberately speeded up to hit Boo with the van, then drove off in the vehicle with hopes that nobody saw the incident and that he wouldn’t suffer any repercussions.

We’re still very much in shock over the incident as well as my neighbours as they were the ones who witnessed the incident and they have rung up Amazon and reported the incident including providing video evidence of the incident. Since the incident the driver has been fired and Amazon has sent their condolences and offered a range of services to honour Boo however, what has been done cannot be undone, Boo is now gone forever and due to the lack of legal frame work in regards to animal rights in the UK, Amazon are unable to take legal action against the driver over Boo’s death.

Every year, countless cats are hit on the roads across the country and many of these incidents go unreported. According to PETA UK (2019), thousands of cats are victims of road accidents annually in the UK alone.

We believe that it is crucial for drivers to report all collisions with cats or any other animals on the roads as this will not only help us understand the extent of this problem but to aid in providing timely assistance to injured animals where possible.

The loss we've experienced as a family is profound and we don't want any other community or pet owner to go through this pain. Therefore, we call upon lawmakers to enact legislation requiring drivers to report if they hit a cat or any other animals on the roads.

My aim of this petition is to introduce a new law which would make colliding an animal with a vehicle and not reporting the collision of an animal as an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960).

The aim of this new law being introduced is to amend any legal loop holes which would have allowed potential ‘offenders’ to not face no legal repercussions for causing harm, suffering or death of an animal by a vehicle and it would allow companies such as Amazon and Uber on the grounds of violating company policies and law, individuals and the owners of the animal (pet) to take legal action against the offender on legal grounds of causing psychological harm and distress.
