My personal experience is perhaps the perfect illustration of why this cause is so crucial.

Every single day, my phone rings 5 to 10 times with calls from "unknown" mobile numbers. These mobile numbers, I've learned (I answered a few times), belong to scammers operating on "unregistered" SIM cards (pay-as-you-go).

The list of scams is endless... False scares of unpaid bills, bank account issues, computer not working...

The rules to regulate the usage of SIM cards urgently need updating.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 3.6 million cases of fraud reported in the United Kingdom in one year alone, many of which were executed using such unregistered SIM cards. Others include scam calls, fraudulent transactions, and phishing on a mass scale.

Necessary action must be taken to prevent the misuse of pay-as-you-go SIM cards. We call for legislation that mandates the registration of all pay-as-you-go SIM cards. This will not only limit the room for fraud and telephone scams, but it will let everyday folks breathe easier, knowing that an unexpected buzz of their phone isn't another attempt to steal their finances or identity.
