Mandate Rail Companies to Maintain and Clean Railway Embankments

The Issue

I am a dedicated volunteer in Towyn, Abergele, Pensarn, Rhyl, where many beach cleans have taken place as we strive to keep our community looking bright and tidy. However, there is one noticeable blight on our landscape - the Network rail line that cuts across North Wales. It disheartens us to see the shocking amount of litter and rubbish that accumulates along the rail embankments, casting a dull and shabby light on our otherwise vibrant community.

It is currently prohibited for anyone to access the rail lines or embankments due to safety concerns, rendering organized clean-ups impossible from a community standpoint. This is where rail line companies, such as Network Rail and others, must step in and shoulder the responsibility. They have a duty to ensure that the spaces adjoining their rail lines, inaccessible to the public yet visible to us all, are kept clean and free from litter.

Apart from aesthetics, this issue also carries environmental implications. Litter, if not cleaned up, can leach harmful chemicals into our soil and water bodies, harming local wildlife and potentially, human health as well. The National Environment Agency reports that litter can take years, sometimes even centuries, to decompose.

Our appeal is simple, yet vital: Network Rail and the like must be held accountable for keeping our railway embankments clean. Doing so would not only improve the visual appeal of our communities but also minimize potential environmental damage.

This is our community. This is our home. And we believe it deserves respect and cleanliness. Together, let’s move towards a cleaner and brighter future, starting with our railways. Please sign this petition and add your voice to this cause.
