Mandate Party leaders to Obtain Security Clearance and read the NSICOP Report
The Issue
Speaking as someone greatly concerned about foreign interference undermining our confidence in public institutions and fostering distrust within society, I propose a crucial change in policy. The current state of affairs has made it personal for me to demand better measures of accountability from our elected officials. Canada's House of Commons party leaders are integral for preserving our nation's security and the public's faith in our system. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that these leaders are knowledgeable about national security concerns and prepared to act upon any allegations of interference.
Pursuant to this objective, I urge that all party leaders in the House of Commons be required to obtain security clearances and read the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) report. Doing so will equip our party leaders to effectively address and act upon allegations within their respective parties. This change will ensure that our leaders are held accountable and Canadian citizens are adequately represented and protected.
According to the Public Safety Canada (2019), foreign interference has been increasingly identified as a potent threat. The involvement of party leaders in mitigating this risk will help instill confidence in Canadian public institutions.
It is high time we ensure that our party leaders are part of this crucial solution. This requirement is not just about presenting a united front against interference, but also about building an aware, resilient, and transparent leadership structure. Please, join me in signing this petition, make these demands a reality, and help restore faith in our institutions.
