Mandate Paid Sick Leave for All Employment

Mandate Paid Sick Leave for All Employment
The Issue
This is a deeply personal issue. My mother, like many other hardworking individuals, is a minimum wage employee. Despite the fact that she gives all she has to the job, she's not impervious to illness. Occasionally, she falls sick, but she has to soldier through the pain, the fever, the discomfort, and go to work. Why? Because if she didn't, the money that we so desperately depend upon, stops. The fear of losing a day's wage keeps her from taking the rest she needs and she sees no other option but to continue to work while unwell.
This is not an issue faced by my family alone. Around 36 percent of workers in Canada don't have access to paid sick leave, according to a 2023 report from the Statistique Canada. Without such protections, workers are often compelled to work while sick, which not only further harms their health, but also risks spread of diseases.
Life is unpredictable and illnesses are no exception. It isn't reasonable to expect anyone to be at peak condition all the time, and not being penalized for being taken ill should be a basic human right. Sickness makes us all vulnerable, yet the lack of paid sick leave undermines the very security that employment should offer. It jeopardizes people's health, and interferes with their economic stability.
It's high time we shift the norms. We must acknowledge the human right to wellbeing and call for mandated paid sick leave in all forms of employment. We want work to mean stability, and for stability to no longer be threatened by illness. We call on lawmakers to step up and enact changes that safeguard workers' rights and health. Stand with us to achieve this necessary change.
Fight for what is right, fight for what is human. Sign this petition as one step closer to making quality of life desirable for everyone.
