The Issue

Having supported countless individuals who are blind or partially sighted, I’ve witnessed first-hand the daily challenges they face. One of my core motivations is ensuring both their safety and that of the general public. When navigating their local areas, it's crucial for these individuals to trust that all precautions are being taken to protect their well-being.

Currently, when someone is diagnosed by an optician with a sight condition that could impair their driving abilities, the responsibility lies solely with the patient to report this to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This process, however, is flawed. Not every individual understands the gravity of the situation or is aware of their obligation to report their condition, which can potentially put their lives and the lives of others at risk.

Statistics from various road safety organizations indicate that vision-related issues contribute significantly to road accidents. With approximately 1.3 million people in the UK living with deteriorating vision, the potential danger is undeniable. A report by the European Commission suggested that up to 23% of all drivers fall below the minimum legal vision requirements for driving.

The solution is clear: Require opticians to directly inform the DVLA when a patient is diagnosed with a sight condition that could affect their driving capabilities. By mandating this direct line of communication, we remove the risk of non-disclosure. This approach not only protects the individual but also safeguards all road users.

Join me in calling for this vital change to ensure our roads are safer for everyone. Let's take action by signing this petition to require opticians to directly report sight conditions to the DVLA.
