Mandate NJ NASW to Advocate for Interstate Compact Licensure Agreement

The Issue

Currently, Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of New Jersey are limited to providing therapy in the states that we are licensed in. Other clinicians such as psychologists, LPC's, etc. have had strong advocacy which resulted in legislation allowing them to practice in several states. To our detriment (and our clients), NASW has only begun to start this process, and our state chapter has not advocated for NJ to join the interstate compact. Further, current legislation limits the reach of our services. When a client attends work in a neighboring state, goes on vacation, moves away, or attends college, they are forced to terminate their therapy sessions.

This is not just a personal issue; it's an issue that affects many social workers and clients across the state. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has reported that mobility is one of the most pressing issues facing our profession today. Yet, despite this acknowledged need for change, there is currently no interstate compact licensure agreement in place in New Jersey.

Such an agreement would allow licensed social workers like myself to provide continuity of care by practicing across state lines. This would greatly benefit our clients who move or travel frequently while also expanding access to mental health services overall.

We urge the New Jersey Chapter of NASW (NJ NASW) to actively work on legislation that will establish an interstate compact licensure agreement for social workers in our state. This step forward will not only help us as professionals but also serve those we are dedicated to helping - our clients.

Please sign this petition if you believe in improving mental health services through increased professional mobility for social workers.
