Mandate MPs to Experience Life on Minimum Wage and work the roles of KEY WORKERS

The Issue

As many UK citizens are burdened with the struggle of keeping their heads and homes above water while having mouths to feed, it is distressingly common for some to end up homeless, in addiction, or even in jail. Despite these realities, too many Members of Parliament (MPs) remain out of touch with the hardships faced by their constituents. This lack of understanding can have significant consequences, as MPs are responsible for making decisions and crafting policies meant to benefit the greater good.

In order to bridge this disconnect, we propose that MPs participate in a mandatory empathy and reality program. This program would require MPs to live and work under the same conditions as those on minimum wage, without the privileges of private healthcare or additional benefits. By doing so, MPs will gain firsthand experience and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by millions of their constituents every day and the hardships of key workers had to go through during the pandemic from retail, manual labour, manufacturing, to all levels of the NHS and emergency services that the government has left behind.

The concept is simple: walk a mile in the shoes of the people whose lives are most affected by the policies they help create. This experience would not only foster empathy but also enable MPs to make well-informed decisions that genuinely reflect the needs and struggles of all UK citizens.

Statistics show that around 4.2 million workers in the UK are on minimum wage, highlighting the widespread impact of low wages on the population. Without experiencing these conditions, MPs are often only privy to second-hand accounts.

Implementing this program would push for a more inclusive and empathetic Parliament, leading to more grounded policy-making that considers the real lives of those affected. This initiative is a crucial step toward a society where the decisions made in the halls of Parliament are informed by actual experience and understanding, rather than assumptions or detachment.

Sign this petition to urge Parliament to make this program a reality and ensure that those who govern us understand the real issues faced by everyday citizens.
