Mandate Mental Health First Aid Training in UK Workplaces

The Issue

Having lost a beloved family member and a close friend to suicide, alongside personally battling mental health conditions, I understand how fundamental workplace support can be to someone struggling. Mental health issues are on an alarming rise, yet support services have increasingly long waiting lists, leaving those in desperate need feeling isolated and unheard. The implementation of Mental Health First Aid training within workplaces across the UK would equip staff with the needed skills to act as a point of contact for fellow employees, reducing suffering in silence significantly.

It's a harsh reality that First Aid training is mandatory for physical health but not for mental health. Given that, as per Mind's research, one in four UK adults will experience a mental health problem each year, this does not seem justifiable or acceptable. The consequences of this inadequate support can be devastating, contributing to the tragic statistic from the Samaritans where there were 6,507 suicides in the UK in 2018 alone—a rise of 11.8% from the previous year.

By making Mental Health First Aid a mandatory training requirement, we would create a safer working environment that recognizes and values mental health just as much as physical health. This could also benefit local NHS mental health services by reducing the overwhelming demand and furthermore assist companies by promoting a supportive and understanding workplace.

Higher awareness, open conversations, and adequate support could be life-changing for those struggling. Support this petition for a change that could not only make our workplaces better, but also potentially save lives.
