Mandate lung cancer screenings in Montgomery County

The Issue

Having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of lung cancer, I am driven by personal experience to advocate for change. Lung cancer has ripped through families and close circles, leaving trails of sorrow in its wake. I've listened to survivors recount their battles and the monumental difference that early detection made for their outcomes. It is with this deep understanding and passion that I urge you to join me in advocating for annual lung cancer screenings to be a standard part of health checkups in Montgomery County, MD.

Currently, too many individuals are diagnosed with lung cancer at advanced stages, when treatment options are limited and the prognosis is often grim. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally, and early detection is crucial in improving survival rates. Yet, despite the known benefits, these screenings are not routinely offered during yearly check-ups. Every year, approximately 200,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in the United States, and early screening can save lives.

By mandating or at least strongly encouraging primary care physicians in Montgomery County to discuss and offer lung cancer screening to eligible patients, we can flip the narrative. Technological advancements have made non-invasive screening options more accessible, and when combined with yearly discussions, we increase the chances of catching this aggressive disease in its earliest, most treatable stages.

This petition calls on local health authorities and policymakers in Montgomery County to implement guidelines and policies that will make lung cancer screenings a routine consideration. By integrating these screenings into regular health visits, we embrace prevention and proactive health management, ultimately saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.

Join me in this vital effort to ensure that fewer families face the heartbreak of late-stage lung cancer diagnosis. Sign this petition to make lung cancer screening a priority in Montgomery County. Your support can lead to action and change for countless individuals and their loved ones in our community.
