I have two cousins and several close friends' nephews who were placed in foster care at young ages. But instead of protecting her, they threw her onto the streets at age 11.
Another cousin, just 6 years old, faced similar horrors. He lived in constant fear and dread. These traumatic experiences should never be part of a child's life, especially when they are promised safety and protection in the foster care system.
In light of these horrifying events, I strongly urge that it be made mandatory for all future foster care applicants to undergo lie detector tests during their application process. It is crucial to vet individuals' true intentions to ensure they are committed to keeping children safe and free from harm. This process can serve as an additional measure to screen those who might pose a threat to vulnerable children.
Moreover, I call for current foster caregivers to also take lie detector tests. This is to confirm that they have upheld their duty to care for these children without causing any harm, intentionally or through negligence. By implementing this, we can identify and take corrective action against those who have failed their duty.
Implementing lie detector tests as part of the evaluation process can be a step towards preventing abuse and harm in the foster care system. Although not foolproof, polygraph tests offer an additional layer of security, ensuring that only those with pure intentions can become caregivers.
