Mandate Legal Requirement for Overtime Pay

The Issue

Like many others, im tired of employers failing to compensate their staff for overtime worked beyond contracted hours. This issue affects a wide range of professions including NHS workers, HGV drivers, and salaried employees across various sectors. It is unjust that hardworking individuals are not receiving the financial recognition they deserve for their additional efforts.

Almost a fifth of employees work at least two hours overtime on a daily basis
More than two thirds of workers have continued to work while being unwell
Refusing to work agreed overtime could breach your employment contract. Britons do up to £9,000 of UNPAID work every year

In the UK alone, workers put in £32 billion worth of unpaid overtime each year according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC). This equates to an average of 7.5 hours per week per worker - almost a full day's work! The current situation not only exploits employees but also undermines fair labour practices.

It's time we address this issue head-on by making it a legal requirement for companies to pay employees who do overtime above their contracted hours. This will ensure fair compensation and respect for all workers' time and effort.

I am a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver, and my company expects me to work overtime without any additional pay. Despite being contracted for 48 hours per week, they often force us to work up to the legal limit of tachograph hours. This is not just about me; it's about all employees who are exploited in this way.

In the UK, there is no legal requirement for employers to pay higher rates for overtime (Citizens Advice). However, this lack of regulation leaves room for exploitation and unfair treatment of workers. According to the Office for National Statistics, around 13% of workers regularly do unpaid overtime - that's over four million people working extra hours without compensation.

We believe that everyone should be paid fairly for their time and effort. Therefore, we call on the government to make it a legal requirement for companies to pay employees overtime when they are asked or forced to work beyond their contracted hours.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair compensation and want our government to protect workers' rights by mandating overtime pay.
